A Republic, If We Can Keep It

This Saturday, Americans will celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s birth. It is a monumental achievement and a reminder of all that those who came before us did to build this nation — and what we and future generations must do to keep it alive and prospering.

In 1776, no one knew whether our revolution would succeed. Even if it did, none knew for certain whether it would result in thirteen tiny nations or one big one. Republics had existed before, in antiquity, but they were typically small city-states, like Athens and Sparta. Any that grew large inevitably turned into empires, like Rome. Our Founding Fathers had ideas and hopes, but no true example to look to of a republic that spanned a thousand-mile stretch of coastline — much less one that sprawled across three thousand miles of a vast continent.
