When Hospitals and Insurers Fight, Pennsylvania Families Lose

Member Group : Lincoln Institute

Pennsylvania families are already paying more for health care. Inflation has driven up the cost of everything from medical supplies to prescription drugs, and insurers are under pressure from employers and families struggling to absorb higher premiums and out-of-pocket expenses.

No single player created this problem, and no single player can solve it alone. But when negotiations break down between large healthcare systems and insurance providers, patients should not be the ones left paying the price through disrupted care and unnecessary uncertainty. Unfortunately, that is exactly what tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians are now facing as Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) remains locked in a contract dispute with an insurance provider that could leave roughly 50,000 patients without in-network access to their doctors and hospitals.
This is not just a dispute between two organizations. It is a warning sign of what happens when deeper structural problems in healthcare go unresolved for too long.
