Trump’s Only Crime in Venezuela is Winning

Once again, President Trump is the bad guy. Not the murderous, multiple-election-stealing, Putin-supporting, political-prisoner-jailing, drug-gang-tolerating, economy-destroying dictator. No, polite society is shocked at Trump’s “rogue” behavior, despite the fact that he has signaled for months that his tolerance for Nicolás Maduro had run out — and that Trump had offered him an exit.

The fact is, over the past 25 years of the Chávez-Maduro socialist dictatorship, millions of Venezuelans have fled the disastrous economy and brutal authoritarianism while those remaining have suffered extreme poverty and suffocating political repression. The knock-on effects of mass migration to other countries and criminal gangs spreading their tentacles throughout the western hemisphere have been severe. Not to mention Maduro has been a steadfast supporter of both Russia and China, two un-democratic and aggressive actors.
