PA House Democrats Pass Budget Busting Spending Plan

This budget season, House Democrats in Harrisburg have decided that government knows best. They’ve backed a budget plan that spends more, saves less, and leaves hardworking Pennsylvanians to pay the tab.

Let’s be clear: the House Democrats’ plan clocks in at more than $50 billion dollars, which is a whopping 5% jump from last year. On paper, it sounds as though this plan sets out to achieve compassionate outcomes. However, when you look closer, the House Democrats’ plan expands bureaucracy without reform, grows costs without accountability, and ignores the state’s structural deficit.

Here at Americans for Prosperity-PA, we’re calling it what it is: a budget that drains our reserves, increases our spending faster than our economy grows, and guarantees higher costs for the hardworking taxpayer down the road. That means higher taxes, more debt, and less freedom for every Pennsylvanian trying to make ends meet.

From a policy standpoint, this isn’t just a failure to balance the budget—it’s a betrayal of the principles our country was founded on. History teaches us that prosperity doesn’t come from top-down control. It comes from bottom-up solutions that stem from free people using their knowledge, creativity, and hard work to solve problems better than any government bureaucracy ever could.

House Democrats’ budget does the opposite. It concentrates power in Harrisburg, treating Pennsylvanians as subjects to be managed rather than individuals who are empowered to make the best financial decisions for their families. That’s a direct rejection of our founder’s vision for the country: the deep-rooted belief that every person has the right to live life as they see fit and to live out their version of the American Dream.

What would a better path look like? First, cap state spending so it can’t grow faster than our economy. Second, require the previous fiscal year’s spending to be retroactive if Harrisburg fails to meet the budget deadline—a phenomenon that has occurred 14 times in the last 24 years. Finally, return power to families and local communities: giving parents real choices in education, reducing barriers for small business, or expanding community-based solutions in healthcare.

A government worthy of free people doesn’t manage our lives. It instead protects our rights and gets out of the way so we can build, create, and thrive right here in our Commonwealth.

To every lawmaker listening: it’s time to reject more spending, more control, and more taxes. To every activist and policy: let’s promote budgeting policies like the Responsible Budgeting Act, so Harrisburg can reject rampant increases in spending and balance the budget, just as we are called to do with our own personal budgeting.

We can get our fiscal house in order. We can ensure that Pennsylvania competes with other neighboring states to retain talent, business, and opportunity by preventing out-of-control tax and spending. But we can’t do this without your help.
