Pursuing the Truth on Marijuana

bAt a recent U.S. Senate hearing, Sen. John Fetterman urged Americans not to be “blinded by the partisan idea” that truth can’t come from the other side. Instead, he encouraged us to “pursue truth no matter where that may have emerged.

It’s the exact approach we should take in the debate over marijuana commercialization for recreational use.

For years, marijuana commercialization, both in recreational and medical use markets, has increasingly become a partisan issue. Those who raise concerns about today’s marijuana industry are often dismissed as right-wing extremists, laughed off as suffering from “reefer madness,” and accused of opposing personal freedom.

But if we’re serious about pursuing truth wherever it leads, we should be willing to follow the evidence, even when it challenges our political assumptions.

The truth is today’s marijuana is fundamentally different from the low-THC marijuana of previous generations. A whole industry has formed that’s transformed marijuana from what was once a relatively low-potency plant into a marketplace dominated by highly potent THC products: concentrates, extracts, vapes, dabs, edibles and other manufactured intoxicants.
