The Three Bears

April 09, 2014

The media strategies of the Democratic candidates for Governor of Pennsylvania closely parallel the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

You have Tom Wolf who got out early and frequently with media ads spending the most money for the biggest campaign. This has resulted in a big early lead.

Then there is Rob McCord who chose the middle ground starting his media campaign well after Wolf, but before Allyson Schwartz. Most polls now show him in second place, trailing Wolf.

And Allyson Schwartz selected the small chair, placing her ad dollars late hoping to catch more voters actually paying attention. She began the race as the front-runner, but has fallen back in the pack.

This is not to suggest Katie McGinty is Goldilocks - you can only carry these analogies so far.

The point here is that the three leading candidates have deployed vastly different media strategies. It provides an interesting case study, the outcome of which will be closely watch by those who plan future statewide campaigns.
