HARRISBURG, PA – This week, the business community and the entire Commonwealth lost a dear friend with the passing of Clifford L. Jones, former president of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry.
"Clifford's contributions to the Commonwealth and the Pennsylvania Chamber are noteworthy both for the breadth of his work, as well as for his steadfast dedication to making the state a better place in which to live and work," said Floyd Warner, PA Chamber president. "He was a distinguished public servant in every sense of the word and a remarkable gentleman."
Cliff's long and illustrious career of public service in Pennsylvania has seen him serve four governors in cabinet positions of Secretary of Commerce; Secretary of Labor and Industry; and Secretary of Environmental Resources. He also served as chairman and member of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, and transitional executive director of the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council.
Cliff served on more than 12 advisory boards and commissions dealing with health, conservation, culture and education; and was a past director of the Governor's Action Team for Economic Development.
Cliff served as president of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry from 1983 to 1991. Under his watch, a historic unemployment compensation reform bill as enacted. He was the founder of the Annual Chamber Dinner, the premier gathering of state business leaders and decision makers.
In 2006, Jones received the PA Chamber's first Catalyst Award, created to honor those who have contributed to the growth and development of Pennsylvania through their work to build a stronger and more vibrant business community.
An avid birder, his extensive travels allowed him to see more than 3,700 species of birds and 300 species of mammals in 55 countries.
"Clifford's mark on Pennsylvania is indelible," Warner said. "He will be missed."
The PA Chamber extends sincerest sympathies to the family of Clifford L. Jones.
