First Nonprofit Congress Meets in Harrisburg
UFC Attends the First Nonprofit Congress at State Capitol Building
Hundreds of nonprofit professionals gathered on PA Nonprofit Day, Thursday, April 17, 2008, marking the first annual Nonprofit Congress led by the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations (PANO). Annualy, April 17 will be recognized as Pennsylvania Nonprofit Day by a Senate Resolution.
Professionals representing PA's 75,000-plus nonprofit organizations discussed the issues and challenges that impact the entire 501(c)(3) nonprofit sector. The ultimate goal of the Congress was to convene in our state's capital, connect with peers, and commit to creating positive change. The event included breakout sessions to discuss in depth the four key issues of leadership, public awareness, advocacy, and capacity building.
"Nonprofits represent taking change by the hand," UFC president, Christopher A. Pender, Sr. (pictured above), stated after quoting Winston Churchill: "If you don't take change by the hand, it will take you by the throat." Chris addressed the delegates about the issue of capacity building, and how nonprofits are part of the solution to social pathologies of today.
All information acquired from the Pennsylvania Nonprofit Congress will be compiled and posted on the PANO website at www.pano.org. The resulting action plan will be presented at the National Nonprofit Congress held this June in Washington, DC. UFC will be sending representatives along with PANO to the National event.
In order to be successful, nonprofits must work collaboratively with each other and government officials. Nonprofits provide an abundance of services to Pennsylvanians. Many of these services offered to the community are services that for-profit agencies aren't equipped to provide like leadership, character enhancement, and parenting programs.
Urban Family Council exists to build healthy families by providing education about, and advocating for, life, marriage, and family. UFC offers dynamic, age-appropriate, character and leadership education for youth in K-12, college-age teens, and parents in the city of Philadelphia and beyond.
Youth Stand Up to Say "Enough is Enough!"
Third Annual Anti-Violence Conference to be held Saturday, April 5, 2008
Urban Family Council (UFC) hosted their third annual "Enough is Enough" Anti-Violence Conference in partnership with The Montgomery County Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) on Saturday, April 5, 2008. This conference motivates youth to become positive role models in their community through engaging them in workshops that help them come up with solutions to violence. It was held at Roosevelt Academy, in Norristown.
Students took part in interactive workshops run by UFC educators focusing on topics including: war and gun control, cyber bullying, the influence of violence in the media and its impact on youth, and what is going on in our neighborhoods locally and as a society.
"Many teens today are engaging in activities destructive to their growth and development," said Ron Whitaker, Manager of the Leadership Education Team at UFC. "Counteracting the popular message of violence, anger, and rage with the timeless message of self-control, healthy self-esteem and positive communication is essential to saving a dying generation."
The dynamic Rev. Derrick Johnson, also known as Pastor 'D', and one of the most sought after speakers/leaders of the youth generation, addressed today's drug and violence problems that are affecting our communities nationwide. He encouraged the students to stand strong despite challenges and to make good choices for themselves, their families, and the community.
WELCOME!
Thanks to all who attended our Open House, April 4, 2008. It was wonderful to have many tour our new facility and gather around a table filled with good food, conversation and hope for the future of UFC.
Obvious to all in attendence was how God is blessing UFC. The evening ended reverently as hand-in-hand we gathered in a circle of prayer lead by Pastor Patrick Cheston. If you weren't able to come that evening, but would like to stop in for a tour, call us at 215-879-2485. We'd love to show you around.
