Judge Resigns, Republican Nomination Race for Seat Begins. Pennsylvania Superior Court Judge Michael Joyce resigned after coming under federal indictment for mail fraud and money laundering. State Sen. Jane Earll, R-Erie, Pittsburgh lawyer Jackie Shogan, Philadelphia Judge Paul Panepinto, Montgomery County Judge Art Tilson and Pittsburgh lawyer Templeton Smith are running for the Republican nomination on September 8.
Vote Smart! Look for the Pennsylvania Family Institute Online Judicial Voters' Guide coming this fall, in time for the General Election on November 6. But you can't vote unless you're registered by October 9!
Mother Prohibited from Reading Bible in Philadelphia Public School, PFI and Alliance Defense Fund File Briefs in Support of Mother. Elementary student Wesley Busch asked his mother to read from his favorite book, the Bible. In response, school officials told Donna Kay Busch that the school viewed the Bible as "proselytizing" and as "promoting a specific religious point of view." The Alliance Defense Fund and the Independence Law Center filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the case.

Renegade Judge Strikes Down Iowa's Defense of Marriage Act: Wake-Up Call for Pennsylvania! The Pennsylvania Family Council said a ruling by a county judge in Iowa highlights the urgent need to pass a state constitutional amendment to protect marriage. "This ruling is the latest wake-up call for Pennsylvania lawmakers, following last fall's New Jersey decision. The question is whether the Legislature will hear the call and act," said Michael Geer, president of the Pennsylvania Family Council.

Calif. Gov. Schwarzenegger Says Marriage Could be Eliminated in Future. In legal briefs to the California Supreme Court, considering whether to license "same-sex marriages" next year, Gov. Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Brown both stated that a future legislature could abolish marriage.
