SEN. TOOMEY: BUDGET IMPORTANT STEP TO REIN IN SPENDING

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) issued this statement regarding passage of the conference report on the budget today.

"I often hear from Pennsylvanians that Washington needs to take serious and substantive steps to rein in our government’s out-of-control spending," Sen. Toomey said. "Today we took an important step in that direction by agreeing to a budget that reaches balance within nine years, honors the bipartisan spending caps we signed into law in 2011, does not raise taxes, and makes it easier for Congress to pass legislation dismantling Obamacare. By taking these steps, America will be a more fiscally sound and prosperous nation, which will undoubtedly benefit our state’s economy and the well-being of all Pennsylvanians.

"I am pleased that this conference report also includes a provision to ensure that more non-taxpayer dollars go for the intended purpose of helping crime victims and not toward budget gimmicks. Further, the budget conference report removes procedural hurdles, which will make it easier to pass legislation to require school employees to have background checks and to repeal the onerous medical device tax – two ideas I have long supported.
"While the result is not perfect, I am delighted that during our first year in control of the Senate, my Republican colleagues and I have now passed a common-sense budget. This accomplishment shows that we can roll up our sleeves, have open debate, and get important things done for our constituents. It also is another indication of how this Senate is starting to work again and pass legislation after years of dysfunction."
