Toomey Issues Statement On Tentative Nuclear Agreement With Iran

Allentown, Pa. – U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) has issued the following statement on the tentative agreement with Iran announced by the president today.

"For nearly 35 years, Iran has repeatedly violated the trust and good faith of the international community and has been a state-sponsor of terrorism around the world. The Iranian government controls Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon and props up Syria’s President Assad while he massacres hundreds of thousands of his own people. Moreover, Iran continuously undermines our allies in the Middle East and openly advocates for the destruction of Israel.

"In light of the Iranian regime’s historical and current behavior, I remain very skeptical of this tentative agreement as we await further details.

"This issue is too important for the safety of the American people for President Obama to act unilaterally. Congress must vote on and approve any final agreement with Iran before sanctions should be lifted. Also, the Senate should pass the bipartisan Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act immediately to establish tougher, prospective sanctions on Iran if a final agreement is not reached by the June 30th deadline."
