Harry Reid: Mouth of the Democratic Party

Member Group : Jerry Shenk

Amusingly, my recent column on Senate paralysis elicited blowback for "impugning the character" of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid who has stonewalled more than 350 House-passed bills.

Sadly, Reid cannot be "impugned" more maliciously than he has impugned himself.

In a recent statement, Reid apologized for making offensive Asian jokes — at an Asian Chamber of Commerce event: "My comments were in extremely poor taste and I apologize…Sometimes I say the wrong thing."

That wasn’t the first time Reid "misspoke."

In 2008, Reid’s dedication speech at the Capitol Visitor Center included this: "In the summertime, because (of) the high humidity and how hot it gets here, you could literally smell the tourists coming into the Capitol."
Perhaps Reid doesn’t know that those "smelly tourists" include his American employers.

In 2010, to an audience of Hispanic voters, Reid spoke about Hispanic Republicans: "I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican, okay? Do I need to say more?"

No, Harry, you said quite enough.

On the Senate floor last February, Reid accused Republicans of telling "false stories" about Obamacare: "There’s plenty of horror stories being told. All of them are untrue, but they’re being told all over America…We heard about the evils of Obamacare, about the lives it’s ruining …Stories made up from whole cloth. Lies distorted by Republicans to grab headlines or make political advertisements."

Only a month later, Reid denied ever having said anything about Republicans in the Senate: "I have never come to the floor, to my recollection, I never said a word about any of the examples that Republicans have given regarding Obamacare and how, how it’s not very good."

Following the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision excusing Hobby Lobby and other for-profit businesses on religious grounds from providing employees certain contraceptives, Reid said: "This Hobby Lobby decision is outrageous, and we’re going to do something about it," promising Senate action to "ensure that women’s lives are not determined by virtue of five white men."

Is there another person in Washington who doesn’t know that Clarence Thomas, one of five justices who decided the case, is black?

In 2008, Reid referred to candidate Barack Obama as "light-skinned" and without a "Negro dialect."

Imagine how that statement would have been reported if a Republican had made it.

Last year, Reid declared Tea Parties "anarchists": "[S]ome say that’s what started World War I, the anarchy movement … The modern anarchists … that’s the tea party… have the same philosophy…: They do not believe in government. Anytime something bad happens to government, that’s a victory for them. And that’s what happened. We have absolute gridlock created by a group of people who represent few Americans. But it makes it extremely difficult to get things done."

So, in effect, Reid, the real congressional bottleneck, Democratically instructed the grassroots to "SHUT UP!" and "get in line." Charming…
Harry Reid is 74, so perhaps we should make some allowances. Is Harry suffering from an early form of dementia? Or is he just an ignorant jerk?
