Toomey Wants Funding Bill to Abide by Spending Caps

SEN. TOOMEY WANTS FUNDING BILL
TO ABIDE BY LAW, SPENDING CAPS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) wants to send the bill that funds two government agencies back to the Appropriations Committee so that it can be reworked to fit under budget caps required by law.

Sen. Toomey will offer a "motion to recommit" the Transportation and Housing and Urban Development (T-HUD) appropriations bill back to committee and direct its total spending be lowered consistent with existing law. The bill spends 10 percent more than FY13 and even more than the president requested.

The T-HUD appropriations bill calls for the government to spend more than $54 billion for FY14, as part of an overall plan to spend above levels mandated by the 2011 Budget Control Act, a bipartisan agreement, signed by the president.

"Federal government spending has doubled since 2000, and it’s time for Washington to finally live within in its means," said Sen. Toomey. "We must not approve a fiscally irresponsible funding measure that breaks the law, spends too much, and puts us even further in debt.
"Instead of more overspending, Congress should stay within the budget limits, which both sides supported and President Obama signed into law. My motion to recommit would help ensure we keep our word on spending restraint and scale back this bloated appropriations bill. I remain committed to working with my Senate colleagues on additional ways to ensure federal spending is done in a more sensible manner that protects our nation’s priorities."
