Welfare Shouldn’t Pay for Abortions

Pennsylvania Pastors’ Network Highlights New Bill that Would Ban Federally Funded Welfare Programs to Pay for Abortions

Philadelphia, PA—A new bill introduced earlier this month on Capitol Hill would prohibit federally funded welfare programs from paying for abortions.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), the prime sponsor of the Welfare Reform Act of 2011, says there is a "broad consensus" that taxpayers should not be forced to fund abortions. The bill, co-sponsored by Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), would ban abortion funding through federal welfare programs. Supporters of the bill reject the notion that abortion lowers poverty and crime.

The bill specifically prohibits federal taxpayer dollars from going to abortion in any of the 77 means-tested federal welfare programs.

"The abortion debate may never be rectified in this country—as long as the opposing views are so vehement," said Colin Hanna, president of the Pennsylvania Pastors’ Network and Let Freedom Ring. "But this issue of Americans literally paying for abortions through their tax dollars is one that many are passionate about. Our freedoms and liberties should prevent us from making possible actions that we are against for moral and spiritual reasons. So we applaud this bill that will prohibit federally funded abortion programs through welfare—and further work to protect life."

The Pennsylvania Pastors’ Network is a group of biblically faithful clergy and church liaisons whose objective is to build a permanent infrastructure of like-minded clergy who affirm the authority of Scripture, take seriously Jesus’ command to be the "salt and light" to the culture, encourage informed Christian thinking about contemporary social issues; examine public policy issues without politicizing their pulpits and engage their congregations in taking part in our political process on a non-partisan basis.

The Pennsylvania Pastors’ Network is a project of Let Freedom Ring, Inc., a 501 c(4) non-profit organization.
