Pennsylvania Independent Launches

Web site to watchdog state government with investigtive reporting and news

HARRISBURG, PA (January 25, 2010) – The Commonwealth Foundation announced today the launch of Pennsylvania Independent (PAindependent.com), an online public interest journalism project dedicated to promoting open, transparent, and accountable state government by reporting on the activities of agencies, bureaucracies, and politicians in Pennsylvania.

"With more media outlets each day discontinuing or diminishing their coverage of the state Capitol, Pennsylvania Independent will be filling the void with timely reporting and investigations of the people and institutions whose actions affect Pennsylvanians’ lives," said Pennsylvania Independent bureau chief Jim Panyard.

Pennsylvania Independent features four to six daily stories dealing exclusively with state government. Additionally, Pennsylvania Independent features in-depth investigations of state activities, politicians, bureaucrats and others making laws and regulations and spending the taxpayers’ money.

Panyard, a former editor for the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, added: "Our mission is to promote greater civic engagement and encourage discussion about public policy, politics, government, and other matters of statewide importance."

Pennsylvania Independent is a project of – and funded through voluntary contributions to – the Commonwealth Foundation, a non-profit, non-partisan public policy education and research institute in Harrisburg. The Foundation neither seeks nor accepts taxpayer grants or public subsidies, and it does not engage in contract work, fee for service, or quid pro quo contributions.
