Student "Quotable" Quotes

Mr. Brett Barry
Newtown, PA
"Dear PFEW,

Although I can only write you a letter, that is the least I can do to thank you for all you have done for me, as well as, for thousands of other teenagers. I can honestly say that my motives and positive image have changed during the past week. I am now more responsible and aware of what my purpose in life is. I want to thank you for the work you have done, because I can assure you that ten years from now, when we are successful businesspeople, we will remember how much PFEW influenced us! Thank you!!"

"Quotable" Quotes

Ms. Abigail Zlockie
Indiana, PA

"Dear PFEW,

I would like to thank you for organizing and giving me the chance to attend PFEW. This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I can now say this was one of the best weeks of my life so far! The many speakers were excellent and I learned a lot of life lessons from all of them. I really feel lucky to be one of those selected to attend PFEW and I will carry some of the information I learned with me forever. I have been truly inspired and want to thank you again for making PFEW possible!"

The "State" of PFEW
by John J. Trombetta, President CEO

Greetings and happy New Year to all of our readers! I hope the holidays were truly joyous and peaceful for you and your loved ones.

Well, 2009 has dawned and, unfortunately, the economic news continues to be pretty grim. Nonprofits everywhere are struggling but those that depend primarily on business contributions, as we do, are being hit especially hard.

Our most recent figures show that our scholarship revenues are down more than 40% on a year-to-year basis (20% for October) - by far the most dramatic decline in our thirty-one year history. I believe in being completely honest with you, our readers and supporters, and there is no sugar-coating what this means to our plans for this year if we are not successful in our fundraising efforts. We really need your help.

For those of you who are current or past donors, you will be receiving a letter from me in the next week which is the second, and most important, gift request letter of our year. Please take a moment to review it and, if possible, respond with either a gift or a pledge. If it is easier, you may also make a pledge online to save time and the cost of a stamp.

***New for 2009!!***

Because of the economy, we are introducing a new gift concept this year called the "Scholarship Pool." As I think all of our readers are aware, the traditional model for gift-giving to PFEW is in individual scholarships ($525 each) that result in the student(s) wearing the donor's name throughout the program and writing to them individually about their experience. For folks who cannot afford an entire scholarship this year, I am asking that you consider making a gift to the "Scholarship Pool" and gifts of all sizes will be so precious and most appreciated. Students sponsored by the Pool will write to PFEW and I will then send copies of several student letters to each donor who has made a "pool" gift. Gifts of all sizes will be appreciated and, as always, you may break your gift into manageable installments. We are happy to send you Complimentary Contribution Invoices whenever you desire them to facilitate the process.

If you are not a previous donor to PFEW, but would like to make a "Pool" pledge, simply click here and follow the easy instructions. No gift is too small and, believe me, the students who are ultimately the beneficiaries will be deeply grateful, as will we.

As an organization dedicated to teaching young people about our free enterprise system, we certainly understand the realities of the ups and downs of economic cycles. We are also completely confident in America's ability to weather this storm as she has always done, emerging stronger and more vibrant than ever. On behalf of our Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and our entire organization, thank you to all of our readers and supporters for believing in our important work. Best wishes to everyone for a truly prosperous and successful 2009!

2009 Applications Already!

The 2009 student recruitment season has begun as we prepare to fill the available slots for the 2009 summer sessions of Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week. Schools Manager, Michelle Warofka, and her "troops" are hard at work communicating with schools to update them on scholarship information, as well as, answer any inquiries and fulfill all requests. To date, nearly 70 schools throughout the state have reserved a date for a PFEW Representative to visit and help generate some PFEW enthusiasm in their sophomore and junior classes - and many more to come!

A number of committed PFEW volunteers (perennial Company Advisors, Judges, etc.) have assisted the PFEW staff by visiting schools in the areas in which they live. A heartfelt "thank you" to all those folks, for sharing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, known as PFEW,
with students in their communities. We couldn't do it without their help! We encourage all of our readers to share this opportunity with students in your community, so you too, can make a difference in the lives of Pennsylvania young people.

As expected, the enthusiasm for PFEW continues among young people across the state as 60+ applications have already been received and the New Year has just begun! If you know a student who is currently a sophomore or junior at the high school level, please encourage them to
submit an application right away in order to beat the rush! The Early Bird Application Deadline is March 6, 2009. Applications may be completed directly on our website in an effort to simplify and expedite the process. The excitement is already building for PFEW 2009!!

Calling all Company Advisors!

One of the most important roles at PFEW each summer are those of our volunteer "Company Advisors". The Advisors are the men and women who will each steward and mentor a team of their own through the activities of a particular week. We will need 105 Advisors to staff the five sessions this summer.
CA Ann Giacobbi (r.) with her
2008 "Company" Stampede Footwear.
It really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If you are interested, or know someone else who might be, simply click here for additional information.
