Transparency in Government

Sunshine Review Pennsylvania Project is a project of the "Show me the Spending"

This is a goldmine of information about Pennsylvania Open Records laws both at state AND municipal level. If this is to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people, then "we, the people" or, at least, some of us who are fascinated by the workings of our government can follow the money and the activities of our elected and appointed officials.

State by State Compare and Contrast: Additionally Americans for Tax Reform is another source of information about State Spending. Even Grover Norquist can do some good things. This site compares State by State policies of open and transparent government. Governor Palin's Alaska is a leader as is Governor Bobby Jindal's Louisiana.

The Informed Voter is My Ally.

School Board Transparency

School Board Transparency Sunlight on Board-Union Negotiations is outstanding. This is only one part though.

The key question: What are our kids learning? Are they learning what they need to learn to productive, self-reliant, self -directed individuals, maximizing talents? Or not. And how do we, the parents and the community, know.

Are there reliable and accessible measurements of student learning performance?

We are the adults; we are supposed to take of the children. They can be somebody; they can be "contendas". See this 24 second video
You waz my brother; you should have looked out for me a little bit; you should have taken care of me just a little bit.... You don't understand, I coulda had class, I coulda been a contenda, I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum...it was you, Charlie.

PA Contracts Online

Pennsylvania Contracts eLibrary: Billions of Dollars of Contracts can be searched.

Brett Mandel, Executive Director of Philadelphia Forward, commented on this article in The Bulletin Legislator to Rendell: 'End Insider Contracts' on the need for competitive bidding on all contracts. There is legislation pending to which he refers. Senator Pileggi commented on the new and very expanded Open Records law which was passed February 2008 and which goes into effect, in full, by January 2009. The Contracts portion went into effect approximately August 2008 and has been implemented in what seems to be a comprehensive way. Competitors can check on competition and, hopefully, compete for work to the benefit of the Commonwealth.

Open Records, the citizen, the Forgotten Taxpayer's Right to Know where his or her money, earned and saved, goes. And it is not a pretty sight which is why the elected do so much to hide the spending.
