Saluting the Veterans
of the Pro-Life Movement

By Maria Gallagher, Legislative Director

After a weekend of honoring our nation's military veterans, it seems appropriate to recognize those veterans that have also served with honor in the pro-life movement.

I think of people such as Congressman Scott Perry, who began his military career in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He went on to serve in the Iraq War, earning a Bronze Star.

In both the state legislature and in Congress, Perry has shown a courageous dedication to protecting the lives of the most vulnerable among us--especially preborn children and their mothers.

I also think of J.J. Hanson, the former Marine who now fights a noble campaign against doctor-prescribed suicide as head of the Patients Rights Action Fund. In battling an aggressive brain tumor, Hanson has shown his mettle and his determination to fight for life.

And I am reminded of the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation, Michael Ciccocioppo, who served 21 years before retiring from the U.S. Air Force. The former military hospital administrator each day demonstrates a passionate commitment to protecting the sanctity of innocent human life. His steadfast and unwavering service is a source of inspiration for not only his staff, but for the many pro-life volunteers throughout the Commonwealth.

So, if you have time this week, send a note of thanks to a military veteran who is now dedicated to saving lives through the pro-life movement. These veterans deserve our heartfelt thanks and support for their valiant missions on behalf of the cause of life.

Abortion's Negative Impact on
Women's Health

National Right to Life recently published a series on abortion's negative impact on women's health based on a report by the British pro-life group, the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children. Part one looked at evidence that abortion-related maternal mortality is much higher than reported in the U.S. and why this is the case. In Part two, we saw how abortion may be connected to intimate partner violence and sex trafficking while giving birth may be linked to better health. Part three looks at how abortion not only affects a woman’s health, but may have an impact on subsequent children. Part four looks at abortion's psychological impact.
